The only difference is that when you're just friends, you're not trying to help each other get somewhere or make each other happy. You might think that this makes it easier to be friends, but in fact it makes it harder.

When you're trying to help someone else get somewhere or make them happy, even if you don't succeed in the end, at least you tried. But when you're just friends with someone, there are no expectations on either side.
